THE DECREE OF AN ANGEL
Hear me and do not mistake these words for repentance. I do not come before thee as a sinner seeking absolution. nor as a broken soul begging for mercy. I have committed no crime against thee. My hands remain unstained, my judgment remains true, and my path remains just. Yet even the highest of beings may acknowledge the suffering left in the wake of their purpose. I shall not deny the pain my actions have brought upon thee, for such denial would be beneath me. Thus, I offer thee these words: I am sorry. Not because I was wrong, but because thy heart was made to bear the burden of my righteousness. A burden no mortal, no creature, and perhaps not even an angel should have been forced to carry. Do not confuse my compassion with weakness. The mountain does not bow before the valley, yet it may still mourn the villages crushed beneath its shadow. Condemn me if thou must. Hate me if it grants thee peace. I shall neither argue nor plead. For I stand as I always have: unbroken, unwavering, and certain. But even a being such as I can look upon the ruins left behind and whisper a single truth… I wish thee had not suffered by my hand.
